STATE COLLEGE, Mar 12 -- The Physics Department of Penn State, in conjunction with scientists from Rising Sun, the TL7 USSR, the Universiti Sains Malaysia (of TL7 Malaysia), Technomage refugees from the Technosphere Star Ship Daedalus, and others, announced today that despite the unusual success of the Technosphere ReUnification effort, as many as one hundred Threads did cease to exist soon after ReUnification.
"Given this was a fall to entropy, only some of this energy will be available to create new Threads or to attract older, isolated Threads to the local cluster," said Dr. Andrew Halloway, formerly of the Thread Physics department at Berkeley. "But we do expect some new Threads to appear."
"Notable shards that have succumbed to entropy include, in the order they ceased to exist: the Kingdom, Extraordinary London, the mystical shard known as Arcadia, the infamous shard known as Infernal London, Gambia, Yugoslavia, Pastoral France (connected to the Kingdom), Ethiopia, Kuwait, South Africa, Falkland Islands, Suffolk England, and Israel," said Dr. Haslan Abu Hassan of the Universiti Sains Malaysia. "Some of my countrymen -- not to mention some of the peoples of Danzig -- will be particularly pleased by the disappearance of the latter shard."
"Most of the 'lost' Threads were tiny bubble Threads, so tiny that they were only hex-numbered blips in our physics model," said Bach-2389A238, a Hive physicist. "They 'popped' right before or right after the so-called 'ritual' -- really more of a massive biocomputational effort aided by nanotechnology-- conducted by the Technosphere. The most notable Thread to pop before the ritual was the Dutch East Indies."
LTC Darfield, commander of Camp Century, had the following comments: "We were, of course happy to support this scientific effort, even if saddened by the results. We had sent scouting teams to a tropical island that we now know was in the DEI. We are sad to hear of its loss as well as that of The Kingdom and that we appear to have lost a total of four gates in this process.
"We have also noticed drops and flucuations in radio and television traffic leading us to believe there may have been other losses. On the positive side, we believe we now have a gate to the Feral Detroit Thread.
"Thanks to assistance from ENY, the Hive and the Technosphere; we were able to recalculate our gate schedules very quickly this time."
