GALVESTON, CTX (Collegian) Slavery has been a key element of the structure of Confederate Texas since the Event. From the Confederate point of view, the South was victorious (celebrated every May as Victory over the North) and earned the right to continue slavery. This was first challenged last year by President Lance Deschene of the Mid Western States as contrary to that country’s concept of freedom. This effort bore little fruit with Confederate Texas although they did honor the president for his support in their military efforts against the invasion by the Sovereign State of New Orleans.
Recently, the moribund Abolition movement seems to have been buoyed by two factors: Manhattan Republican women and other reformers who have moved to Confederate Texas, and the heavy efforts of Dr. Fred Charlton to support a new movement and free the slaves of Texas. The issues to solve to allow such a result are quite extensive, politically sensitive and economically difficult. It remains to be seen if Abolition, now heavily tied to the Temperance movement in Texas, will have any long term effect.
